  4.     Hope for the future is fading among many Romanians, only
  5. four months after the overthrow of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
  6. Last week crowds of up to 4,000 opponents of the National
  7. Salvation Front, the transitional government that took power
  8. after Ceausescu's hurried execution, protested in Bucharest
  9. against interim President Ion Iliescu, whom they accuse of still
  10. sympathizing with communism. Romanian newspapers and witnesses
  11. reported that police beat some of the demonstrators, a charge
  12. denied by the government.

  14.     The demonstrators believe the Front holds an unfair
  15. advantage in parliamentary elections slated for May 20. Some
  16. charge that the Front may attempt to rig the balloting. Critics
  17. say almost 90% of the group's members are former Communists.
  18. Iliescu's vow that a "return to the past is impossible" has
  19. failed to reassure his detractors. Says Sergiu Cunescu, chairman
  20. of the center-right Social Democratic Party: "People live in
  21. fear."
